On the 3rd of August 2010, Israel launched an assault on the Lebanese Army!
Israel has launched an assault against the Lebanese Army in Odeisseh, south of Lebanon. Three Lebanese soldiers fell martyrs and many more were injured during the clashes. On the Israeli side, a lieutenant colonel was reported killed and another wounded. This is in addition to the death of Assaf Bou Rahhal (a journalist working for al Akhbar daily newspaper) and other innocent bystanders.
As part of an ongoing breach of Lebanese sovereignty and of resolution 1701, the Israeli army penetrated into the Lebanese side to plant surveillance cameras. The clashes erupted after they attempted to uproot a tree on the Lebanese side of the fenced border. The Lebanese army bravely responded, before four shells from a tank fell on their position in Odeisseh. The Israeli forces used phosphorous bombs forbidden internationally, which led to the outbreak of large fires in the region.
The Israeli foreign ministry held the Lebanese government responsible for the escalation on the border, while the United Nations Forces in Lebanon called on both sides to exercise maximum restraint. Deputy Force Commander Santi Bonfanti was in contact with the Lebanese Armed Forces and Israeli army command, urging for maximum restraint.
This incident occurred only one week after Fanoos had published an article entitled Will there be a war in Lebanon soon?
