Maronite Our Lady of Lebanon parish -Toronto-

The Maronite parish of Toronto was established in 1979. The service was in St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church on Roncesvales Street. The Antonine Maronite Priests of St. Charbel Windsor held the service. Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church of Toronto was established in June 11th , 1983, by the Antonine Maronite Order under the blessings of the newly established Maronite Archdiocese of Canada and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto, and with the help of the Maronite Community.

The Parish grew in number in the last two decades, reaching over one thousand families. His Beatitude The Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir The Patriarch of The Syro - Maronite Church has honored Our Lady of Lebanon Church during his Apostolic visit to Canada in March 2001.

In this great event of the 25th anniversary of Our Lady Of Lebanon Maronite Church of Toronto we present our best congratulations for all families and members of the community. In the midst of the worst time during the war that was taking place in our beloved country Lebanon, the catholic archdiocese in London Ontario asked the Antonine Maronite Congregation to establish the Maronite mission in instituting Saint-Charbel monastery in Windsor in 1976 for the service of Saint Peter community in Windsor and later on to institute Saint Anthonys parish in Leamington for the service of the maronites in London, Ontario.

In response to the consistent demand requested by the maronite community in Toronto, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto under the newly appointed Cardinal Emmett Carter, encouraged the same Antonine Congregation to expand its services to include Toronto and its vicinity. So the Antonine Superior General Michael Bou-Fadel has decided to establish the Maronite parish in Toronto. By the end of the year 1978, the priests of Saint-Charbel in Windsor, Father Cesar Ashkar and Father Jean Sader, started their weekly trips to Toronto to celebrate the Sunday mass at Saint Michael Cathedral. By the beginning of 1979, Father Charbel Chidiac had joined the service to Toronto and continued the weekly visits organized between Toronto and Windsor to celebrate the masses at Saint Vincent De Paul (Roncesvales) Church.

In response to the persistent demands of the maronite parishioners to establish a church for the maronites in Toronto, the Superior General Michael Bou-Fadel decided to grant them this wish. During the mandate of the Superior General Elias Atalla, the Antonine Maronite order bought the Epiphany Anglican Church on 1515 Queen St and renamed it Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite church on its great Dedication Day the 11th of June 1983, as a maronite monastery and a church of Our Lady of Lebanon. All this happened with the assistance and financial support of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto and the blessings of his Excellency Mgr Elias Chahine, the bishop of the maronite eparchy in Canada, which was established in Montreal the same year, as well as the help and support of the parishioners, especially the first parish counsel whom at the time were represented by Uncle Joe Homsy, Tom Leon, Eddy Boulos and many others who worked hard and sacrificed a lot to make this great project a reality. This resulted in a great change in the life of the Lebanese community and the maronites in particular. The Churchs monastery has observed the hard work and commitment of many General Superiors, priests, committees, companies and families, to form the bases of what we have today and be proud of the accomplishments that have been realized thus far so today?s generation can go forward to a better future. During the time of the Superior Generals Elias Atalla, Boulos Tanouri, Jean Slim and Simon Atalla, the following priests were serving consecutively the maronite parish in Toronto Father Charbel Chidiac, Father George Bou Fadel, Father Nohra Seif, Father Michel Rohana, and Father Emanuel Nakhle, with the assistance of Father Joseph Keikati, Father Antoine Badr, Father Philemone Selwan, Father Joseph Aakouri, as well as the Deacon Youssef Bassil.

All this would not have been possible if it was not for the combined work of the Maronite Lebanese catholic families in Toronto who formed many committees, councils and confraternities that had and still have a great influence on organizing and strengthening the spiritual and community work that is taking place in the parish as well as the community. Furthermore we acknowledge the efforts of the hard working volunteers including the alter boys, the parents and their children, the choir, the virgin Mary confraternity, the first communion committees, the youth group that are keeping the heritage, Our Lady of Lebanon Scouts Group and responsibles, the Sunday school teachers and volunteers, the previous Saturday morning school teachers, and the employees and the volunteers in the churchs office which involves accounting and general church data as well as the church website team.

It is impossible to mention all the volunteers and the people that assisted in establishing and strengthening this wonderful parish, be it through charity work, sacrifices or donations, however, be assured that their names are printed in the church?s records as well as the heavens. So we ask the Lord almighty to bless them and bless their work and donations and may He grant them their good wishes. We remember also all sick and suffering members who couldn?t make it to attend this event, and al those brothers and sisters departed with the promise to keep them in our prayers.

Since 1983 the Maronite Eparchy of Canada had three Bishops: the late Mgr Elias Chahine, Mgr George Abi Saber and of course our current Bishop Joseph Khoury who is the present bishop of the Maronite diocese in Canada and who is always ready and eager to serve all of the parishes and the priests who are serving the Eparchy abroad.

Our parish which is composed of approximately thousand families, who came from all over Lebanon and its region, to spread like a drop of oil that spilled in Toronto and its vicinity, has almost the same surface of Lebanon itself. As a result of the change of the Maronite demography in Toronto and the increase in the distance that separates the parishioners, the spiritual service was extended to Kitchener-Waterloo and Pickering. Despite all the distances that separate the parishioners, the eagerness to develop multiple spiritual activities has never subsided, in fact, it is stronger than ever and growing even stronger. This is an indication for a brighter future that future generations would be proud of.

Saint John Apostle mentioned numerous times in his letters the following great sentence: Bothers, let us all love one another because God is love. The greatest love of all is when one lays his life for others. So what are we waiting for to live by Gods words
