Intelligent readers may skip the next few paragraphs.Much had been said and will be said to vilify this pope in the coming days, that Ratzinger is a nazi - in fact, he comes from an anti-nazi Catholic family - and that the Church itself has commited multiple crimes in the past.The Church has apologized for the crimes it commited for the inquisition, for the crusades, for persecuting the jews. the protestants, the Renaissance astronomers, the sodomites, the rich, the poor, the tall and the sort etc... Even if apologies wont bring back any victim, it helps healing the past, and Islam hasnt even initiated that process. Most Muslims feel that the papacy had a moral obligation to apologize for the crusades. Perhaps. But the Islamic conquest was nothing less but a reverted crusade on a larger scale. Mention this in a Muslim country, and receiving an apology will become the least of your worry.Generations of bigots have worked hard to erase any trace of pre-Islamic civilization. Nevertheless, there was something before Islam. Syriac was the mainstream language in Christian Lebanon until the XVIth and Syria still had a Christian majority in the XIth century. For some reason, the crusades were wrong but the Arab invasions were not.I dont want to look like those idiots fighting about what happened between Ali and Muawia 1500 years ago like it took place last Friday.
