Its million inhabitants are a unique blendof the Eastern and Western cultures.Named Beroth, the city ofwells, by the Phoenicians. It is one of theoldest settlements of man as evidenced by relics fromthe prehistoric communities. In Phoeniciantimes, however, it was dwarfed by thrivingByblos, Sidon and Tyre. Whenoccupied by the Romans under the command ofPompey in 64 B.C., it entered the mostglorious period of its ancient history. In 15 B.C. itwas named Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Berythusand acquired the rights of a Roman city-state. Whatmost contributed to its fame, however, was itsSchool of Law which, under SeptimusSeverus (192 - 211 A.D.) excelled the Schools ofConstantinople and Athens and rivalledthat of Rome.Beirut retains to this day itsrole as a great cultural center with great impact onthe Middle Eastern region. Its 8 universities havegraduated a large number of the areas prime moversand shakers.
