Over 1,100 Lebanese have been killed and more than 4,000 have been wounded, according to the Government of Lebanon. More...The ResponseThe Government of Lebanon is leading the early recovery process. Prime Minister HE Fuad Siniora has established a Recovery and Reconstruction Cell under the Policy Advisory Unit, a project supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Building on its strong presence in Lebanon before the conflict, UNDP is working to meet the Prime Minister #8217;s official request for assistance with a package of quick-delivery, high-impact initiatives. These initiatives, intended to bridge the gap between crisis and reconstruction, are:PROJECTBUDGETRapid Repair of Key Municipal Infrastructure to restart local services and support the return of displaced persons to their homes.US$ 20,000,000 Clearance of Rubble and Debris from Beirut?s Southern Suburbs US$ 8,000,000 Emergency Oil Spill Clean-Up in service of the environment and economyUS$ 7,000,000 Jump-Start Public Administration ServicesUS$ 4,000,000 Recovery of Fishermen?s LivelihoodsUS$ 6,000,000 Strengthening Government Recovery Planning US$1,300,000 TOTAL:US$46,300,000The GoalAchieve an immediate and visible impact, through most needed projects, in the shortest possible time and setting the stage for further reconstruction by Government, the Lebanese people, and the international community. These projects will permit basic social, economic and administrative infrastructure to return to a minimum level of operation, provide a foundation from which community self-help recovery activities can proceed, and prevent further deterioration of national and natural assets. UNDP is working with its partners in the United Nations Development Group and the World Bank to set in motion this first phase of recovery. NeedsThe Government of Lebanon needs immediate support as it leads this critical rebuilding effort throughout the affected areas.
