The Shipping ExpertMonday, July 31, 2006 Collapse of a Growing Country In just two weeks of sustained Israeli attacks, the Lebanese economy has been knocked so far back it may never fully recover.Almost all the war-torn countrys bridges and 80% of its major roads have been crushed. Airports and ports, telecoms sites and TV towers, schools and hospitals have been bombed.Much of the $50bn that has been injected into the country during the last decade to rebuild it after the 1975-1989 civil war may have been wasted if the onslaught also brings about the collapse of Lebanons still fragile democracy, along with any faith in the nations new beginning.Growth in the global economy could slow dramatically as a direct consequence of the spike in oil prices, that has itself partly been caused by the regional crisis. For the international community, bailing out Lebanon as part of efforts to calm the situation in the Middle East, could prove a more tempting option than allowing the situation to escalate and thus cause a lengthy, global economic downturn.posted by Lynn Hajje 8:58 AM0 commentslinks to this post Thursday, July 27, 2006 My Cry from Lebanon This is a letter i received from my friend that id like to share:To my Israeli friends: You are still my friends.I was born on July 12th 1980.My name is Nadine. We were finally Lebanese and proud to be.Little did I know that within a few hours, thousands of unwanted candles would set Beirut and Lebanon on fire, not to be blown out for days to come.My first day’s enemy was shock.Shocked to know of Hezbollah’s unwarranted trespassing and kidnapping of 2 Israeli soldiers. Shocked to know of my own ignorance about Lebanese detainees in Israel and of Israeli occupation of Mazare3 Shab3a in South Lebanon. Shocked to know that Beirut can be set on fire; an image that existed only symbolically in my childhood years. My second day’s enemy was anger.Anger at Hezbollah for implicating the Lebanese government. Anger at a religion’s obsolete beliefs and existence. Anger at a procreating machine-like population. Anger at the Palestinian cause. Anger about the Lebanese existential condition: a field for others’ wars. Where is the rental fee for each tournamentMy third day’s enemy was my intellectualism.I was looking for justification for the Israeli disproportionate retaliations. I was looking for justification for its refusal for diplomacy and negotiation. I found none. I was looking into the international incapacity for intervention. I was looking into my own i
